Making museum exhibits accessible online

I use 360-view cameras and social media to make museum exhibits, programs, and tours available to an online audience. Why? Digital programming can reach working-class people and those who may not be able to physically visit a museum. Parents and teachers can use digital museum material for educational purposes. Also, and perhaps most important to me, people with disabilities can use digital museum tours to pre-plan their visit or access places that may not be ADA-friendly.

I've worked with the National Children's Museum to upload, caption, and write social media posts for their collection of 75 STEAMwork videos. These videos helped reach families and teachers even though the museum was closed during COVID-19.

Researching equity data and best practices

I believe that every person should have access to education and the arts. LGBTQ+ people, individuals with disabilities, and BIPoC people have helped build art and education movements in the United States and beyond. Despite making these historic contributions, though, these groups of people have systemically been denied the opportunity to fully participate in museums, libraries, and other arts centers.

I've created best practices guides for the National Trust for Historic Preservation to advise the organization about how to best incorporate stories about LGBTQ+ and disability history. I've also worked with the National Endowment for the Arts on their 2022-2026 strategic planning on how to promote more equitable art programs.

Digital volunteering

Since 2017, I have volunteered to transcribe digitized materials at the Library of Congress. This digital volunteer work involves reading, transcribing, and editing historic documents like letters from suffragettes.

I also spend my time volunteering with LibriVox's audio library and the Smithsonian's Wikipedia pages.

Writing new content and organizing websites

I have written new web content about historical sites, National Parks, and museums. For example, I volunteer to write new entries for the National Park Service's project Telling All Americans' Stories. I propose and write entries for the NPS website about women's history and disability history in the United States.

I also have helped with content management and editing by organizing websites. As an editing intern with the Lesbian Poetry Archive and with Lambda Literary, I helped manage the organizations' WordPress pages to ensure that users could easily navigate the websites.

Library and literacy programming

Libraries do more than distribute books -- they are community hubs. Librarians help connect people with educational programs, affinity groups, technology, and other vital resources.

I lead free virtual yoga story time sessions for children's librarians. These sessions guide children through poses based on popular movies and books like Don't Let Pigeon Drive the Bus.

I also created the Serendipity Lending Library as an open-access, virtual library to replicate the experience of visiting a Free Little Library even during the COVID-19 quarantine.

Health advocacy

I want to encourage more community members to engage in meaningful nonprofit programs. To do this, I must consider my community's bodily and sensory needs. I am in the Digital Storyteller program with the Peer Health Network, where I create videos and other educational content about disability and LGBTQ+ health topics for the SelfSea app.

I also sew and distribute face masks and reusable cloth menstrual pads to local people in need. I've collaborated with the Rural Women's Health Project in Florida, and I've created maps to chart pharmacy deserts in Gainesville, Florida.

I regularly lead free yoga sessions, especially for plus-size, LGBTQ+, and disabled individuals who may otherwise feel unwelcome in a gym setting.
